A Month in the Books and we Have Some Results
My eyes are on the prize of December 8th, which will mark 21 straight days of Keto eating, which meets a self-imposed goal that I’ve been attempting for 5 weeks now. After re-educating myself on the science of a ketogenic diet, there is absolutely no significance to 21 days, so I’m not sure why that number stuck in my head. Maybe it’s because that’s the number it takes to break a habit, but it’s what I’m going for.
For those interested in keto diets, it takes 2-4 days to get into ketosis, and another 30 - 90 days to become fat adapted, which is where your body completely stops looking for carbs to be the primary fuel source. Becoming fat adapted is going to be my big goal starting in 2020.
WEEK 5 GRADE: A
I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I am that some of the better ketosis side effects are starting to kick in. First, appetite suppression is back bay bay! I’m finally not hungry all the time ‘yal -- and it’s great. It’s so nice to be able to get through intermittent fasting without feeling like I want to die. This week I’ve been able to go 18+ hours without eating with relative ease, and I’ve only eaten a couple of times because it made sense timing wise, not because I was all that hungry. This is the feeling I’ve been waiting for for awhile.
I also have so much more energy than I did three weeks ago. This week was a little bit of an anomaly because work was such a beast, but for the most part I've felt quite energized. But with that also comes a little insomnia at night, which I've been combating with melatonin.
I have also managed to stay very leveled this week in the face of the turmoil at work and issues with the car. So I call that win as well.
WEEK 5 RECAP
WINS: Stayed keto, lost weight, made it through Thanksgiving and my bar night without cheating.
SETBACKS: Had like 5 alcoholic drinks on Wednesday which probably cost me a couple of pounds lost, also just found out Imitation Crab has WAY more carbs in it than I thought. Boo.
WEEK 6 GOALS
DIET: Stay keto until December 8th, but probably beyond. My next scheduled cheat day is on Dec 14.
LIFESTYLE / EXERCISE: I’m going to “weigh” the pros and cons of re-uping my gym membership in December rather than waiting until the new year with all the other Janu-Warriors.
MENTAL HEALTH: I'm going to try something new this week and do some light meditation at least 15 minutes a day.
